Pepsico India has hired temporary workers in order to continue normal operations at its bottling plant in Bajpur, Uttaranchal, following a month-long strike by employees. The company declined to comment on the extent the strike has affected its production at the Bajpur plant. "We won’t be in a position to comment on that," the spokesperson said. Pepsico’s Bajpur plant has an estimated capacity of one lakh cases of soft drink per day. About 85 permanent employees of the company at the plant have been on strike since June 8 against "the sudden transfer of colleagues". The spokesperson said strike was illegal. The striking employees and the company management have been at loggerheads over the transfer issue. The workers allege that the management began transferring employees after they decided to form a workers' union. Refuting the claim, the company management said the transfers were a part of appointment letters of the workers and were also a part of the certified standing orders applicable to them. |
