Karan Thapar has won the Asian Television Award for best current affairs anchor for the third time. This year's award is for a Hardtalk India interview broadcast on BBC World in April with former Law Minister and BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley. Competing against Thapar were almost 1,500 other entries from a total of 14 different Asian countries. Entries from CNN and Singapore's Channel NewsAsia figuring among the runners-up. Thapar first won the award in 1999 and again in 2003. 'Cable and Satellite Channel of the Year' as well as the 'Best News Programme' category for its programme 'Waves of Destruction' on the devastating Tsunami in 2004. MTV Networks Asia Singapore was the winner for best live event coverage for '2005 MTV Asia Aid.' NDTV 24x7 was runner-up for its coverage of the 'Blast in Srinagar Transport Office. UTV's programme 'Gol Gol Gullam', a game show involving children which airs on Hungama kids' channel, won the top prize, pipping broadcasters from Taiwan and Japan. Barkha Dutt was runner-up in the 'Best News Presenter or Anchor' category for 'The Nation Tonight' on NDTV 24x7. CNBC Asia Singapore's Teymoor Nabili won the award in this category for CNBC Tonight. The Asian Television Awards, launched in 1996, are designed to recognise and reward programming and production excellence. This is a non-profit making event. All profit goes to the Asian Television Awards Sponsorship Fund, which was set up to assist students to further their studies in broadcasting-related courses. |
